Ursula + Kash - Red River

Edit 07-06-2011: I made the lines and hair colors darker/bolder, and now I feel the colors all go together.


finally done!

I finally got around to coloring the sketch I did of Ursula & Kash (Red River manga) so many years ago.

I outlined this entire piece with the pen tool... you see all that detailed jewelry and crap? Yeah.... not fun. So many hours on just the line art, spanning over 3 weeks.

The coloring? Done over the entire 4th of July weekend, starting Friday night. I used the Eyedropper tool on the only-known colored picture of all the manga characters (all head shots). Kash is wrapped in a teal-colored cloth, and with his orange hair, that was a fitting color. Ursula has brown hair, but was wearing white, so I matched Kash's teal with red for her.

The Red, White, & Blue color setting is just a coincidence on this 4th of July Weekend, thought it was cool when I realized it just this moment...

I'm not 100% happy with this piece yet... I may return to fool with it some more later, but I am out of patience with it currently. Mainly, the soft colors of the skin, hair, and line-art seem to clash hard with the bold and bright reds and teals I chose.... Maybe the contradiction is a good thing?



Spoiler: For those who don't know Red River's Ursula and Kash: They are secondary characters. Their romance starts, expands, and tragically ends through 3 books, Ursula sacrificing her life for the better of the kingdom. Very tragic, but their love story is very moving.

Disclaimer: I have no idea how messed up their fashion for their time period is. I referenced several Red River manga issues and the Red River Art Book to get jewelry and costume ideas, meshing it all together. If you critique this piece, please do not critique on incorrect fashion.
